A joint meeting of Lungthu was held in Guwahati on Tuesday bringing together representatives of Suspension of Operations (SoO) groups, the Kuki-Zo Council (KZC), and Members of the Legislative Assembly. The meeting reviewed the current political situation and the ground realities faced by the Kuki-Zo people over the past several months.

At the start of the meeting, participants recalled the formal political demand placed before the Centre in September 2023. Speakers also referred to the prolonged ethnic violence and the hardship faced by the community for more than a year. The meeting noted allegations of targeted attacks against Kuki-Zo people and expressed concern over what it described as the role of state agencies during the period of unrest. Members also took note of the de facto demographic and administrative separation that, according to them, has continued for nearly 32 months.

After detailed discussions, the meeting unanimously adopted a set of resolutions. The participants demanded that the Central Government expedite a political settlement to meet the long-standing demand for a Union Territory with Legislature. They stressed that any such arrangement must include strong constitutional safeguards to protect land ownership and the rights of the people.

The meeting further resolved that the negotiated settlement must be finalised and signed before the normal tenure of the present state Legislative Assembly ends. On the question of restoring an elected government in Manipur, the body stated that any new government must first give a written and time-bound commitment to support the proposed political settlement.

In the absence of such commitments from both the Centre and the state, the meeting said it would respect public sentiment and refrain from participating in the formation of an elected government in Manipur. The participants also set a final deadline, stating that a clear and lasting political solution for the Kuki-Zo people must be achieved before the 2027 General Election.
