Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi has made strong allegations against the ruling BJP in Assam, claiming that serious internal politics is unfolding within the party and that an attempt is being made to damage the political career of former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

Addressing reporters, Gogoi alleged that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his close circle are deliberately working to push Sonowal out of the political spotlight. He said the people of Assam, especially those in Upper Assam, deserve to know what is happening inside the BJP and why the party leadership is “hiding facts” from the public.

According to Gogoi, there is a clear divide within the BJP. He claimed that while one group is united against Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister’s camp is allegedly working to weaken Sarbananda Sonowal politically. Gogoi alleged that whenever Himanta Biswa Sarma attends programmes in Upper Assam, Sonowal is often not invited or even mentioned.

He further claimed that several major announcements made earlier by Sonowal, including a sports university and multiple colleges and institutions in Upper Assam, have not seen proper follow-up or implementation. “Schemes announced during Sarbananda Sonowal’s tenure are being ignored,” Gogoi alleged, adding that this has directly affected development in the region.

Referring to a recent programme in Dibrugarh, Gogoi said Sonowal’s name was not even displayed on banners or hoardings. He described this as a deliberate move and not an oversight. “This is not just about one leader. This is injustice to Upper Assam and its people,” he said.

Gogoi also alleged that there is an informal instruction within the BJP that leaders should avoid highlighting Sonowal if they do not want to upset Himanta Biswa Sarma. He claimed that this internal pressure has led to Sonowal being kept away from public events.

Calling the situation “deeply unfortunate,” Gogoi said such internal power struggles show that the BJP in Assam is more focused on internal politics than public welfare. He added that the Congress would continue to raise these issues and stand with the people of Upper Assam, whom he said are being ignored in this political tussle.
