Intelligence agencies have issued a nationwide alert ahead of Republic Day on January 26, warning that banned Khalistani groups and terror outfits operating from Bangladesh may attempt to carry out attacks in New Delhi and other major cities, according to intelligence sources.

Inputs shared by the Intelligence Bureau suggest that radical handlers based abroad are increasingly using criminal gangs in Punjab as local operatives. These gang members are reportedly being used to provide logistical support and ground-level assistance to extremist elements with the aim of disturbing internal security during important national events.

Sources said these gangsters are active across several states, including Haryana, Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Over time, they are believed to have established links with Khalistani terror networks, creating a growing nexus between organised crime and extremist groups. Officials described this development as a serious concern, especially with Republic Day celebrations approaching.

In response to the threat perception, security arrangements in the national capital have been tightened. Police and other security agencies have increased surveillance and intensified checks at sensitive and crowded locations.

As part of preparedness measures, the North District Police recently carried out a series of mock drills to test response time and coordination among different agencies. Officials said four such drills were conducted during the first half of January at locations considered vulnerable due to heavy public movement. These included the Red Fort, ISBT Kashmere Gate, Chandni Chowk, Khari Baoli, Sadar Bazar and several metro stations.

The exercises focused on strengthening anti-terror preparedness, improving coordination between agencies and making both officials and the public more alert to possible threats.
