With the Assembly elections of 2026 approaching, political activity has started gaining pace across Assam. In the newly created Boko–Chaygaon Assembly constituency, leaders of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) have demanded that the candidate from the ruling alliance be fielded from their party.

The demand was placed during a press conference held at the Boko–Chaygaon AGP Legislative Council office on Monday. Speaking to reporters, Council President Golap Medhi said that in the past, the alliance had always allotted AGP candidates in both the Boko and Chaygaon Assembly seats. He said that the same system should continue even after the reorganisation of constituencies.

Medhi appealed to the central leadership of the alliance to officially allot the Boko–Chaygaon seat to AGP, saying that party workers had already begun preparations on the ground. He also confirmed that AGP leaders Naren Rabha and Deben Boro had expressed interest in contesting from the new seat and had started preliminary campaign activities.

The press meet was also attended by former Boko MLA Jyoti Prasad Das, who extended his support to the demand and interacted with party workers present at the meeting.

According to party sources, the newly formed Boko–Chaygaon constituency includes 22 village panchayats and has a total voter strength of around 2,15,240 electors. As informed by Medhi, nearly 70,000 voters from the previous Chaygaon seat and about 1,45,000 voters from the former Boko constituency are now part of the new constituency.

The voter profile shows a diverse population. Around 93,167 voters belong to Scheduled Tribe communities, while 24,057 voters are from Scheduled Caste backgrounds. The constituency also includes approximately 25,931 Muslim voters, 22,076 Bengali Hindu voters, and around 50,009 voters from other communities.

AGP leaders said that the party has a strong organisational base in the area and expressed confidence that the alliance would consider their long-standing presence and historical representation while finalising the candidate.
