The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has begun early preparations for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, with the party giving special importance to the New Guwahati constituency. Senior party leaders and local workers gathered at the AGP headquarters for a detailed discussion on how the party can strengthen its support base in the area and retain its political influence.

The meeting was attended by Rajya Sabha MP Birendra Prasad Baishya, who also plays an important role in guiding the party’s strategy. AGP general secretary Simanta Thakuria and a number of local leaders and workers from New Guwahati were also present. Party sources said the meeting was called to review the political situation at the grassroots level and to understand the expectations of party workers and voters in the constituency.

During the discussion, many leaders expressed the view that AGP should project its own candidate in New Guwahati for the 2026 Assembly elections. According to those present, party members from the constituency are keen that the seat should remain with AGP and that the leadership should give priority to local voices while finalising the candidate. The leaders felt that doing so would help maintain the party’s identity and connection with voters.

Speakers at the meeting also stressed the importance of strengthening organisational work at the booth and ward levels. They said that regular engagement with local residents, community leaders and youth groups would be important in the months ahead. The party workers discussed plans to expand membership, increase outreach programmes and hold more interactions with people in different parts of the constituency.

The session also allowed local cadre to share their feedback with senior leaders. Many of them highlighted issues faced in the constituency and suggested ways to improve the party’s presence on the ground. The leaders agreed that close coordination between the central leadership and local units would be key to improving performance in the 2026 polls.

AGP leaders at the meeting urged the party’s central leadership to treat New Guwahati as a priority seat, stating that local party workers strongly support the idea of the constituency remaining under AGP’s leadership. They said the mood among grassroots workers was positive, but efforts needed to continue in an organised manner in the coming months.
