All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal said that his party will contest the 2026 Assam Assembly elections on its own, without entering into any alliance with other opposition parties. The AIUDF leader said the party has decided to follow a “solo” strategy and will focus on strengthening its organisation across the state in the run-up to the polls.

Speaking to the media in Guwahati, Ajmal said the AIUDF has no plans to join hands with the Congress or any other opposition party. He said the party believes in fighting elections independently and presenting its own agenda before the people of Assam. According to him, the AIUDF’s aim is to expand its base and challenge the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) directly.

Referring to the BJP, Ajmal said that his party’s objective is to defeat the ruling party in the next Assembly elections. He said the people of Assam are watching the performance of the present government and will decide their future accordingly. He added that AIUDF workers are being asked to prepare at the grassroots level and reach out to voters in all constituencies.

During the interaction, Ajmal also commented on several political leaders in the state. He dismissed Congress leaders Akhil Gogoi and Gaurav Gogoi, claiming that they do not have a strong and wide support base among voters. Referring to Akhil Gogoi’s victory in the previous election, Ajmal said it was by a narrow margin and expressed doubt about the outcome in the next polls. However, he added that he holds no personal grudge and said he would pray for Akhil Gogoi.

Ajmal also made remarks about Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He accused the Chief Minister of using artificial intelligence tools to create or edit images to project himself as a hero during his recent visit to Dubai. Ajmal further criticised the state government over the charge sheet filed in the case related to singer Zubeen Garg, describing it as “a drama.” He said such actions reflect a “bad mindset” and added that he remains cautious while speaking, fearing that legal cases could be filed against him as well.

On questions about reports suggesting that some AIUDF MLAs may join the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Ajmal said he was not worried. He said the party has no objection if any of its MLAs choose to leave. Instead, he asked people to look at how many AGP MLAs may be willing to join the AIUDF in the future. He also claimed that the AGP would not survive politically without the support of the BJP and said that, on its own, the regional party would be reduced to zero.
