Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi today met World Cup-winning cricketer Uma Chetry at her residence and slammed Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for what he called “a shameful neglect of a national hero and injustice to the Gorkha community.” Gogoi, speaking exclusively to Northeast Scoop, accused the BJP-led state government of ignoring Uma’s historic achievement and failing to give her the honour she rightfully deserved.

Gogoi said that Uma, who hails from a poor Gorkha family in Bokakhat brought global recognition to Assam by helping India lift the Women’s T20 World Cup, yet the Chief Minister, Sports Minister and Assam Cricket Association (ACA) President failed to show up at the Guwahati airport during her homecoming. “This is a moral and political failure. The Chief Minister has done injustice to Uma and the entire Gorkha community. This is injustice to a woman,” Gogoi said.

He said that the Chief Minister “does not respect the Gorkha community,” adding that his government’s silence and absence reflected a deeper bias. “If Uma were from another influential section, the CM himself would have been at the airport. But when a poor Gorkha girl brings glory to India, no one even bothers to receive her,” he said, calling it a “heartbreaking and shameful reflection of the government’s priorities.”

The AJP chief also tore into the Assam Cricket Association, accusing its president Taranga Gogoi and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia of “playing politics inside the ACA” instead of supporting sportspersons. “Devajit Saikia is ruling ACA. He is turning it into a political arena. Instead of promoting players, he is promoting politics. This is disgusting,” Gogoi said, demanding accountability from both ACA and the state Sports Department.

Gogoi further questioned why the Sports Minister Nandita Garlosa or any senior government official failed to show up, adding that “the least the government could have done was to send a liaison officer or a representative to welcome a World Cup winner.” He also criticised her statement “no information” for the absence of arrangements, calling it an “excuse to cover up the government’s apathy.”

Meanwhile, The Gorkha Students’ Union has expressed deep disappointment, calling it a “black day for Assam’s sports history.” The ACA has since announced a felicitation programme for Uma Chetry on November 9, but opposition parties say it is “too little, too late.”
