Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday held a detailed review meeting in New Delhi to assess the current situation in Manipur, which has been facing unrest for the past two years. The meeting was attended by Manipur Governor Ajay Bhalla and senior officers from the Union and state administration.

The review comes at an important time, as President’s Rule is currently in force in Manipur. The Central Government imposed President’s Rule on February 13 after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned on February 9. The Manipur Legislative Assembly, which has its term till 2027, has been placed under suspended animation since then.

According to officials, the meeting lasted for nearly two and a half hours. During the interaction, Amit Shah was briefed about the security situation, ongoing operations, and the steps being taken to restore peace and normal life in the state. Presentations on law and order and relief measures were also made at the meeting.

Those present included Manipur Government Adviser Kuldeep Singh, Chief Secretary P K Goel, and Director General of Police Rajiv Singh, apart from the Governor and senior Union Home Ministry officials.

An official source said the review was significant because the current period of President’s Rule is due to end on February 13. The Centre is reportedly examining the possibility of extending it further in view of the prevailing circumstances.

Security forces have continued search and area-domination operations across different parts of Manipur ever since ethnic clashes broke out in 2023. The violence had led to the deaths of more than 260 people and left thousands of families displaced. Many of them are still staying in relief camps.

The clashes involved members of the Meitei community and Kuki-Zo groups, and since then, several rounds of discussions and administrative reviews have taken place to stabilise the situation.

Meanwhile, the Union Home Ministry has also extended the deadline for the Commission of Inquiry set up to investigate the 2023 violence. The Commission has now been given time until May 20, 2026, to submit its final report.
