Arunachal Pradesh’s young human rights activist, Ebo Milli, was stopped from travelling abroad and offloaded at Kolkata airport on Saturday while he was about to board his flight to Dhaka, Bangladesh. Officials at the Kolkata immigration reportedly intervened and prevented him from leaving the country. So far, no official explanation has been given for this action.

Milli, who has emerged as a strong voice in Arunachal Pradesh, is known for his outspoken stand on human rights and environmental issues, especially his criticism of the state’s ongoing dam construction projects. He has consistently raised concerns over their long-term environmental and social impact.

According to documents available, Milli had been invited to attend the Regional Infrastructure Monitoring Alliance (RIMA) Conference 2025, scheduled to be held from October 5 to 7 at Hotel Lake Castle, Gulshan-2, Dhaka. The invitation letter, issued by RIMA convener Hasan Mehedi, confirmed that his round-trip airfare, accommodation, meals, and local conveyance were being covered by the organisers. The conference is set to be inaugurated by H.E. Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Honourable Advisor to Bangladesh’s Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change. A field visit to Patuakhali and Barishal was also part of the post-conference schedule.

Ebo Milli, holder of Indian Passport Number Y8316359, issued in September 2023 and valid till September 2033, had been formally requested to participate in the conference. The invitation clearly underlined his role in discussions on environmental protection and infrastructure monitoring in the region.

This incident is similar to what happened recently to Bhanu Tatak, another young activist from Arunachal Pradesh. In September 2025, Tatak was stopped at Delhi airport when she attempted to travel abroad for higher studies. Both Milli and Tatak have been consistently speaking against large-scale dam projects in Arunachal Pradesh, questioning their ecological and social consequences.
