The ongoing student protest at Tezpur University received strong public support after the President of Asam Sahitya Sabha, Basanta Kumar Goswami, visited the protest site and expressed his solidarity with the students. The students have been protesting against the Vice-Chancellor of the university and have been demanding action from the authorities.
Goswami, who is a respected literary figure in Assam and the head of the state’s largest literary body, spent time with the students and spoke to them directly. He said he fully supports their movement and appreciates the peaceful manner in which they are protesting. He also assured them that the matter will not be ignored at higher levels of government.
During his visit, Goswami said that the Asam Sahitya Sabha would write a letter to the Chief Minister of Assam regarding the situation at Tezpur University. He also said that he would personally try to meet the President of India to highlight the concerns raised by the students and to request intervention so that the matter can be resolved in a fair manner.
Goswami said he felt deeply concerned after learning about the unrest on the campus. He said the university holds an important place in Assam and should remain a peaceful centre of learning. He added that the sacrifice and commitment of students should be respected, and that their voice must be heard properly.
While addressing the students, Goswami spoke at length about the importance of moral strength, unity and peaceful democratic protest. He said students must remain calm and disciplined while continuing their movement, and at the same time, authorities should respond responsibly. He also said that students are the future of the state and the nation, and therefore their problems cannot be taken lightly.
Goswami also expressed sadness that the situation had reached a stage where students felt compelled to protest. He said universities should be safe and open spaces where both teachers and students can work together without fear or confusion. He added that it is unfortunate if communication breaks down between the administration and the student community.
The Asam Sahitya Sabha President also said he was willing to discuss the matter with the administration and government officials if required. He said that the aim should be to find a peaceful and just solution so that normal academic life can resume while ensuring that students’ concerns are properly addressed.
Goswami also praised the unity shown by the students. He said the scale of participation reflected their emotional and social strength and their deep concern for the university. He added that student movements must always remain peaceful and based on democratic values, but at the same time, the authorities must also show sensitivity and responsibility.
He further said that universities play a key role in shaping the future of a society. Any crisis in such institutions, he said, affects not only the students but also the wider community. Therefore, the issue must not be allowed to grow into a larger conflict and needs timely attention.
Students at Tezpur University have been protesting for several days, raising allegations against the Vice-Chancellor and demanding changes in the administration. They have been holding peaceful demonstrations on the campus, attracting wide public attention across the state.
With the involvement of the Asam Sahitya Sabha President, the movement has now gained additional support from an influential cultural and literary body. Many students said they felt encouraged by Goswami’s visit and his assurance that the matter would be taken to the highest authorities.
Student representatives expressed hope that the intervention of respected figures from civil society would help speed up discussions between the university administration and the student community. They also said they want a fair inquiry into their demands and a permanent solution so that academic activities can continue smoothly.
