The Asam Sahitya Sabha has expressed deep concern over the recent clashes that took place between members of the Karbi community and non-Karbi residents in the Kheroni area of West Karbi Anglong district. The apex literary body of Assam said that the incident has caused harm to the atmosphere of social harmony and brotherhood that people of the state have always valued.
The Sabha shared its views during a press conference held at Bhagawati Prasad Baruah Bhawan in Guwahati on Friday. Speaking to the media, Asam Sahitya Sabha president Dr. Basanta Kumar Goswami said that the organisation was deeply worried about the tension and unrest reported from the region. He said such incidents not only disturb peace in the affected area but also leave a negative impact on the social fabric of the entire state.
According to Dr. Goswami, Assam has always been known for peaceful coexistence among different communities. He stated that any event which weakens this unity is a matter of concern for everyone. The Sabha president also said that the literary body stands firmly with the Karbi community members who have been affected by the incident in Kheroni.
To understand the situation better and to extend solidarity, the Asam Sahitya Sabha will soon send a delegation to Karbi Anglong. Dr. Goswami informed that the team will travel to the district within the next two days and will try to meet people from the affected areas. The purpose of the visit, he said, will be to listen to the concerns of local residents and to appeal for peace and normalcy.
The Sabha also urged the Assam government to deal with the matter in a responsible and sensitive manner. Dr. Goswami said that the government must ensure that steps taken in connection with the incident are fair, just and aimed at restoring confidence among all communities. The organisation further called upon the West Karbi Anglong district administration to carefully examine every aspect of the incident and to take lawful action wherever necessary.
During the press meet, the Asam Sahitya Sabha made a strong appeal to all sections of society to work together for peace. The organisation requested political parties, social organisations, intellectuals and common citizens to join hands and help prevent further tension. It emphasised that mutual respect, dialogue and cooperation are essential to maintain peace and harmony in the state.
The Sabha also reminded everyone that Assam’s strength lies in its unity among diverse communities. It said that literature, culture and language have always played an important role in bringing people together, and urged all stakeholders to uphold the values of understanding and brotherhood.
