Dipjyoti Gogoi, a resident of Thowra Doul near Demow, was detained by the police for nearly 20 hours on Sunday, reportedly for sharing posts on social media in support of the ‘justice for Zubeen Garg’ campaign. Gogoi was released on Monday morning without any formal charges being filed against him.
Speaking exclusively to Northeast Scoop, Gogoi said the situation was deeply stressful. “I am an activist and I’ve handled many issues before, but this is the first time I am dealing with something like this,” he said. “The issue of Zubeen Garg is very sensitive. I wanted to talk about justice that needs to be given to him and create awareness through social media.”

Gogoi said that he had uploaded several photos circulating online. One of the photos, which appeared on showed Shyamkannu Mahanta with a police officer and two other people. “I didn’t believe the claims regarding this photo, so I deleted it.,” Gogoi said.
During his detention at the Demow Police Station, Gogoi said he was questioned extensively for about 24 hours. “They mentioned that if I checked Facebook or Telegram, I might get a call.”
Gogoi described the experience as “total harassment” and said it left him confused and under pressure. “For about 30 minutes, I didn’t know what to believe. The whole experience felt very disturbing,” he added. He also issued a caution to citizens, saying that direct messaging government officials might need reconsideration in the context of democracy and protection of the state constitution.
Gogoi had shared two specific photographs on Facebook. One showed Shyamkanu Mahanta with two police officers, while the other depicted Mahanta alongside Assam Chief Minister. Both posts were linked to the ongoing campaign seeking justice for popular singer Zubeen Garg. Despite the prolonged detention, Gogoi was released without any legal action, and the posts were deleted before his release.
