Assam completes house-to-house voter verification, prepares for next phase of electoral roll update Assam completes house-to-house voter verification, prepares for next phase of electoral roll update

The Election Commission of India has completed a large house-to-house verification of voters across Assam as part of the Special Revision of the electoral roll for the 2026 Assembly elections. This work was done to make sure that the voter list is clean, correct, and up to date. Officials said the verification was carried out from November 22 to December 20, 2025, and it covered the entire state in a very detailed manner.

According to the press note issued by the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Assam, the state now has a total of 2,52,02,775 electors, including male, female, and other voters. Out of these, 2,51,09,754 electors (excluding D-voters) were verified during the exercise, which means there was 100 per cent coverage. Officials also visited 61,03,103 households across the state to complete this process. This was done so that every eligible voter could be recorded correctly in the electoral roll.

During verification, officials also identified names that needed to be corrected or removed after following due legal process. A total of 4,78,992 deceased electors were identified for deletion. Another 5,23,680 electors were found to have shifted from their registered addresses, and 53,619 multiple entries were detected where the same person’s details matched in more than one place. These findings will now be processed carefully so that the voter list remains accurate and fair.

This work was carried out with the help of a very large administrative team across Assam. There were 35 District Election Officers, 126 Electoral Registration Officers, and 1,260 Assistant Electoral Registration Officers working on the exercise. More than 29,656 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and 2,578 BLO Supervisors were also involved. Political parties also took part in the process, and 61,533 Booth Level Agents were appointed to observe and assist. Officials described this level of participation as an important step to keep the process open and transparent.

The state election authority has said that the Special Revision is also focused on purification of the electoral roll. This means the administration is trying to remove errors, add eligible new voters, correct spelling mistakes in names and addresses, and update records where people have shifted. It also includes deleting names of deceased persons after proper verification. The goal is to have a roll that is accurate before the 2026 Assembly polls.

The Election Commission has also approved a rationalisation process. After this rationalisation, Assam now has 31,486 polling stations, which is reflected in the latest draft rolls. This step has been taken so that polling locations are more convenient and properly arranged for voters across the state.

The state has also been holding regular meetings with political parties to keep them informed. Two rounds of meetings have already been held, and thousands of meetings between BLOs and party agents have taken place at the local level. Another round of consultation with political parties has also been scheduled to review the progress of the revision exercise.

The electoral revision will now move into the next phase, which is the Claims and Objections period. The Integrated Draft Roll is being published on December 27, 2025, and citizens will have time from December 27, 2025 to January 22, 2026 to submit claims and objections. Special campaign days have been fixed on January 3–4 and January 10–11, 2026, when people can visit designated locations for help. Gram Sabhas and Ward Sabhas are also being organised in all rural and urban areas to spread awareness. The final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on February 10, 2026.
