In a significant move to investigate the tragic death of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, the Governor of Assam has constituted a One-Man Commission of Inquiry. The commission will be headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court and will look into the circumstances surrounding Garg’s death in Singapore on September 19, 2025.

The notification for the commission was issued on October 3 under Section 3 of the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952. According to the notification, the commission’s main responsibilities include examining the full sequence of events before and after Garg’s death, identifying any lapses, negligence, or wrongdoing by individuals or authorities, and investigating the possibility of external factors, including foul play, conspiracy, or other unlawful acts.

The commission is required to submit its report within six months from the date of notification. Its terms of reference make it clear that the panel will look carefully at any acts of omission or commission by authorities or individuals that may have contributed to the singer’s untimely demise.
