A 22-year-old postgraduate student from Assam was allegedly brutally assaulted inside a hostel of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU) in Madhya Pradesh after being questioned about his identity. The incident has triggered strong protests on campus and led to strict disciplinary action by the university authorities.

According to police and campus sources, the incident took place in the early hours of January 13 at the Guru Gobind Boys’ Hostel. The victim, Hirosh (Hiroj) Jyoti Das, a Master of Arts student in Economics, had stepped out of his room to use the bathroom when he was allegedly stopped by a group of five to seven students. Some of them were reportedly intoxicated. The group questioned him about his name and place of origin. After he said he was from Assam, he was allegedly attacked.

The student suffered serious injuries, including a fractured nose, injuries near the eyes and temples, and deep cuts on his face. He was first treated at the university dispensary and later shifted to a hospital for further medical care. During the attack, the assailants allegedly also issued death threats.

The incident sparked anger among students on campus. The next day, students and NCC cadets staged a protest and surrounded the administrative building, demanding justice and better safety for students from the Northeast.

Following the protest, the university’s disciplinary committee expelled five students named in the complaint and handed the matter over to the police. An FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to causing hurt and criminal intimidation. Authorities are also investigating whether racial abuse or discrimination was involved.
