The Congress Party today saw a fresh round of new members joining its fold in New Delhi, as several leaders from different social and political backgrounds formally entered the party in the presence of senior leaders. Congress Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi welcomed the group and said the steady rise in new entrants shows how political sentiment in Assam is changing month after month.
Gogoi said the new members were first introduced to AICC General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal, after which they were officially inducted. Among those who joined on Wednesday were Dr. Langpi, Gautam Dhanuwar, Bubul Das and Ashok Roy Pradhani. Gogoi also introduced Birkhang Boro, a former UPPL Central Committee member, and Advocate Shah Nawaz, who practises at the Gauhati High Court. Another entrant, Shankar Jyoti Kutum, also took the stage.
Gogoi said that over the last few months, the tenth day of every month has become a symbolic date for political shifts in Assam. He recalled that on September 10, several former AGP leaders moved to Congress, and on November 10, nearly 11,000 people from various districts joined the party on the same day. He said this pattern reflects a “clear change in the political wind” across the state.
According to Gogoi, leaders from almost every major community in Assam including Bodo, Karbi, Mising, Adivasi, Rajbongshi, Scheduled Caste, Ahom and minority communities are now expressing confidence in the Congress. He said people are coming from regions as diverse as Bodoland Territorial Region, Dhubri, Jagiroad and Tinsukia.
Gogoi said unemployment remains the biggest concern raised by people across communities. He added that industries in Assam are struggling, and that without revival of local industries, job creation will not be possible. He criticised the condition of traditional sectors such as the tea industry, silk and textile industries, and bell-metal cooperatives. He alleged that some leaders close to the ruling party are taking over collapsing tea gardens and that large tracts of tribal land around 40,000 bighas are being handed over to private companies.
He said the Congress wants to rebuild Assam’s economy by strengthening local industries, supporting small and medium enterprises, and promoting food-processing units. He also emphasised that tribal land should be used for industries that benefit tribal communities themselves.
Gogoi accused the current government of creating what he described as a “factory of hatred” rather than building real industries. He said the Congress intends to shut down this “factory” and focus on development that brings employment and stability to the state.
He thanked AICC leaders including KC Venugopal, Jitendra Singh, Prithviraj Prabhakar Sathe and Manoj Chauhan along with senior Assam Congress leaders present at the event. Gogoi said the party is preparing for a major programme at Ramlila Maidan on December 14, where Rahul Gandhi will speak. He added that more than a thousand people from Assam are expected to travel to Delhi for the event.
