Senior leader of Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Rajen Gohain, on Friday launched a sharp attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, warning that Assam could face more difficult times if the party remains in power.
Speaking to reporters, Gohain alleged that democratic values in Assam have weakened under the present government. He claimed that the administration has been functioning in an authoritarian manner and urged people to think carefully before the upcoming elections. According to him, a failure to bring political change could push the state into what he described as “deep darkness”.
Gohain accused the government of destroying democratic institutions and ignoring the voices of ordinary citizens. He said people may have to face even harsher conditions in the future if the same leadership continues. Emphasising the role of voters, he said the responsibility now lies with the people to decide the direction in which Assam will move.
Targeting Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the AJP leader criticised his public statements and political approach. Gohain questioned the repeated use of the term “Miya” in political speeches and asked what concrete steps the government has taken to protect Assam’s interests. He also referred to alleged political understandings involving leaders such as Asaduddin Owaisi, raising questions about the BJP’s political stand.
Gohain further accused the government of failing to protect land rights, including in Sixth Schedule areas. He claimed that local communities have not benefited from the present policies and alleged that land has been handed over to outsiders.
