Assam’s identity at risk: LoP Debabrata Saikia alleges outside voters added to rolls Assam’s identity at risk: LoP Debabrata Saikia alleges outside voters added to rolls

Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia has launched a scathing attack on the BJP government, claiming that the very identity and existence of Assam are under threat due to deliberate manipulation of the electoral rolls. In a strongly worded statement, Saikia alleged that the process is being carried out under the guise of Special Revision (SR) of the voters’ list.

According to Saikia, the BJP government, driven by what he called an intense hunger for power, is no longer committed to protecting the interests of indigenous people of Assam. He said that after repeatedly speaking about safeguarding indigenous dominance through constituency re-delimitation, the government has now, sensing political risk, allegedly turned to secret and systematic voter list manipulation.

The opposition leader directly named Assam minister Ashok Singhal, questioning whether he is acting as the “main architect” of what Saikia termed a dangerous conspiracy. He claimed that the alleged plan aims to weaken the Assam Accord and gradually push the state into the so-called “Hindi belt.”

A key point raised by Saikia was the reported inclusion of the names of around 80 people from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in the voters’ list, all allegedly registered from a single small room on Tayabulla Road in Guwahati. He said this example exposes what he described as a “vote-theft formula” being applied in Assam, similar to the “Haryana model.”

Saikia further alleged that the strategy involves inserting between 5,000 and 10,000 voters from outside Assam into each constituency, which, he warned, could significantly alter the state’s demographic composition over time. He demanded clear answers from the government on how such large numbers of voters could be added without proper verification and scrutiny.

Calling the alleged attempt extremely dangerous, the opposition leader urged the people of Assam to remain alert and vigilant. He accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of systematically destroying Assam’s language, culture, and social fabric, while pushing what he described as a fascist policy of “one nation, one language.”

Saikia also criticised what he called the BJP’s double standards, accusing the party of buying votes with money on one hand and manipulating the voters’ list on the other. He said such practices strike at the very foundation of democracy and undermine public trust in the electoral system.
