The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday openly challenged Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman Mohsin Naqvi over the Asia Cup trophy fiasco following the final match between India and Pakistan.
At the ACC meeting held on Tuesday, India raised strong objections regarding Naqvi’s handling of the post-match presentation. Reports stated that India refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi, who instead took it with him, sparking a heated debate.
BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla, representing India at the meeting, questioned Naqvi firmly about his actions. Shukla reminded him that the trophy belongs to the ACC and not to Naqvi personally. He highlighted that taking the trophy to his hotel room was inappropriate and insisted that it must be handed over to the Indian team in a proper manner. He further urged the ACC to intervene and resolve the matter quickly.
The discussion escalated when Naqvi defended himself, claiming he felt humiliated and that the Indian team had not explicitly stated in writing that they would refuse to accept the trophy from him. He suggested that further questions should be addressed on a different platform, not during the ongoing meeting.
Sources said Naqvi initially refused to congratulate the Indian team on their tournament win, leading BCCI representative Ashish Shelar to step in and insist on the formal acknowledgment. Despite repeated requests, Naqvi has not agreed to hand over the trophy, leaving the BCCI frustrated. Officials from India emphasized that the trophy rightfully belongs to them and indicated that they are prepared to approach the ICC to lodge a formal complaint if the issue is not resolved.
