The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing to release its new list of central contracts for national players, and early indications suggest that senior cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma may receive lower retainerships in the upcoming cycle. Sources in the board say the two players, who have been part of the top A+ category for several years, are likely to be moved down to Grade A because they are no longer active in all three formats.
The BCCI offers contracts in four grades — A+, A, B and C. These come with fixed yearly retainers and are separate from match fees. The system is meant to reward consistent performance and encourage players to stay committed to all formats, including domestic cricket. Selection to a grade depends on several factors such as match participation, form, fitness, and involvement in tournaments like the Ranji Trophy.
At present, both Kohli and Rohit earn Rs 7 crore per year under the A+ bracket. If they are shifted to Grade A, their retainership will fall to Rs 5 crore. Officials say the decision is linked mainly to the fact that neither of them plays Test or T20Is regularly now, which is a key requirement for the A+ category.
On the other hand, Shubman Gill, who now leads India in Tests and ODIs, is expected to be promoted to the top bracket. His steady presence across formats and growing leadership role have strengthened his case. Ravindra Jadeja, who stepped away from T20Is but remains a major part of India’s Test plans, is also likely to continue in A+.
