Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said the Bharatiya Janata Party is fully prepared to face the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, announcing that the party will contest in 102 or 103 constituencies as part of the NDA alliance. He said the party has already completed its candidate selection process and that nothing remains pending on the organisational front.
Speaking to reporters, Sarma said the BJP’s preparations are complete at every level. “The alliance is ready, the constituencies are ready, and the list of candidates is ready. We have done all the work in advance,” he said. He added that compared to earlier elections, the party will field more youth and women candidates this time.
The chief minister’s statement follows a core committee meeting held earlier on November 21, where the BJP formally decided to contest the 2026 elections in alliance with its NDA partners and set a target of winning 103 out of the 126 Assembly seats in the state. The meeting focused on organisational preparedness, development priorities, and election strategy.
The core committee meeting was attended by BJP national general secretary (organisation) B L Santhosh, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, state BJP president Diplu Saikia, Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal, MP Kamakhya Tasa, state in-charge Harish Dwivedi, state general secretary (organisation) Ranjib Kumar Sharma, and other senior leaders.
Ahead of the meeting, Sarma chaired the concluding session of a state-wide review tour covering all 126 Assembly constituencies. Coordinators and constituency in-charges presented feedback on government schemes, public outreach, and local issues.
During the meeting, Sarma said the state government would take firm steps to address social and legal concerns such as polygamy, “love jihad,” and “land jihad.” He also stated that action would continue against illegal encroachments on forest land, grazing reserves, and tribal belts and blocks.
On the issue of granting Scheduled Tribe status to six communities, Sarma said the government aims to reach a “just and acceptable” decision in the upcoming Assembly session after consulting all stakeholders.
B L Santhosh stressed the need for booth-level strengthening and a clear strategy to meet the 103-seat target. He also reviewed organisational restructuring and grassroots expansion. Currently, the BJP has 64 MLAs in the Assembly, with AGP, UPPL, and BPF as its NDA allies.
