Assam Congress in-charge and AICC General Secretary Jitendra Singh has criticised the BJP and the Assam government after an audio clip allegedly involving Palasbari BJP MLA Hemanga Thakuria went viral. In the clip, a commission was reportedly demanded in connection with the sale of land. Speaking to the media during his visit to Assam on Friday, Singh said the incident has exposed how land brokerage has become common in the state.
He said the matter shows how a “mafia raj” has spread across Assam under the BJP government. According to him, land deals are being influenced for profit, and corruption has now turned into an organised system. Singh alleged that the ruling party has mastered the way of making money in the name of development.
Referring to the Prime Minister’s visit to Assam for the inauguration of a new airport terminal, Singh questioned the real purpose of the visit. He alleged that large areas of land in Assam are being handed over to big corporate groups such as Adani and Ambani. He further claimed that leaders of the BJP are visiting the state frequently to push forward what he called a corporate agenda. Singh said that this has raised concerns among the people about the future of state resources.
Singh also criticised the Prime Minister for not speaking about singer Zubeen Garg, who has a large fan following in Assam. He said the people of the state expected a statement on the issue, but the Prime Minister remained silent. Singh also questioned the government’s stand on the MGNREGA scheme, asking why its name and format had been changed and why the scheme had allegedly weakened.
He said that banners and posters alone would not bring votes for the BJP. According to him, the youth of Assam want stable jobs, while tea garden workers want fair wages. He added that these are the real issues on the ground.
Speaking about the visit of the BJP’s national working president to Assam, Singh alleged that a large amount of money was spent on publicity. He questioned whether such funds could instead have been used for public services like hospitals and schools.
Singh also levelled serious allegations against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, calling him “unreliable” and claiming that nothing he says can be trusted. He accused the government of running on false promises and said that the people of Assam have already made up their minds to vote for change in the next Assembly elections.
Responding to the Chief Minister’s claim that Congress tickets are sold for money, Singh said the BJP should first look within its own organisation. He alleged that cattle and areca nut syndicates are active in Assam and that the Chief Minister should answer questions related to these issues instead of attacking the Congress.
On the subject of alliances for the 2026 Assembly elections, Singh said that discussions are already taking place under the leadership of Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia. He added that the Congress is open to alliances with like-minded parties and is ready to work together with any group that wants to join the opposition bloc. Seat-sharing, he said, would be based on the strength of each party in different constituencies.
Singh also clarified that recent remarks by a Congress minority leader regarding reservation were personal views and did not reflect the official position of the party. He said that the party has already taken appropriate action in that regard.
During his Assam visit, Jitendra Singh also met heads of various frontal organisations, departments and wings of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee. Around 31 chairpersons attended the meeting, where they discussed political strategy ahead of the next Assembly polls. The meeting was also attended by APCC President Gaurav Gogoi, Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia, AICC Secretary Manoj Chauhan, former MP Abdul Khaleque, Mahila Congress President Mira Borthakur and several other senior leaders and functionaries.
APCC General Secretary Pradyut Bhuyan, Media Department Chairman Bedabrat Bora, Social Media Vice-President Aman Wadud and many other Congress office-bearers were also present. Later, Singh held further discussions with senior general secretaries of the APCC and district Congress presidents to review organisational work in different parts of the state.
The Congress leadership said the party will continue to raise issues such as unemployment, workers’ welfare and alleged corruption as it prepares for the upcoming elections.
