A man was killed on Wednesday evening after a crude explosive was hurled from a flyover in a busy part of the Bangladeshi capital, triggering panic in the area and adding to growing concerns over public safety.
The blast took place beneath a flyover in front of the Moghbazar Freedom Fighters’ Memorial, a location that usually sees heavy movement of pedestrians and vehicles. According to police, the explosive device was thrown from the top of the flyover and exploded on the road below.
Witnesses said there was a loud bang, followed by chaos as people nearby ran for cover. The victim, later identified by family members as Siam, suffered critical injuries in the explosion and died shortly afterwards. He was rushed for medical help, but could not be saved.
Relatives said Siam worked at a private factory and was passing through the area at the time of the incident. His identity was not immediately known and was confirmed later after family members reached the spot. Police said he appeared to have no direct connection to the attackers.
Soon after the blast, police cordoned off the area to prevent further danger and to allow forensic teams to begin their work. Traffic in parts of the Moghbazar area was temporarily affected as security personnel searched the surroundings and collected evidence from the site.
Masud Alam, Deputy Commissioner of the Ramna Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said initial findings suggest that the explosive was deliberately thrown downward from the flyover. “The motive has not yet been confirmed,” he said, adding that a detailed investigation is under way to identify those responsible.
Police officials said the attackers fled immediately after throwing the device and there have been no arrests so far. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack till now.
