Former US President Donald Trump has renewed his demand for the United States to restart nuclear weapons testing, saying other nuclear-armed nations are already carrying out secret tests. Trump claimed that China, Russia, Pakistan, and North Korea have continued underground nuclear detonations, but do not publicly acknowledge them.
Speaking during a recent interview, Trump said the United States is at a disadvantage because it follows transparency norms, while rival countries do not. “Russia’s testing and China’s testing, but they don’t talk about it,” he said. “You know, we’re an open society. We’re different. We talk about it… They don’t have reporters that are going to be writing about it.”
Trump went further, adding Pakistan to his allegation. “Certainly North Korea’s been testing. Pakistan’s been testing,” he said. He also suggested that these countries conduct the tests deep underground to avoid detection. “They test way underground where people don’t know exactly what’s happening with the test. You feel a little bit of a vibration.”
Trump Suggests Tests Can Go Undetected
Global monitoring systems are designed to detect seismic waves generated by underground nuclear blasts. These stations have historically been able to identify nuclear tests carried out by countries such as North Korea. But Trump argued that some nations have found ways to conceal their tests from international monitoring.
According to Trump, covert testing is possible because other governments control information and do not allow public questioning or reporting. He said such secrecy gives these nations an advantage over the United States. “They don’t go and tell you about it,” he said. He suggested the US should restart testing to keep pace with these alleged developments.
