In a major political development, the Indian National Congress on Tuesday held a crucial meeting with leaders of seven opposition parties in Assam to forge a united front against the ruling BJP ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

The meeting, chaired by APCC President Gaurav Gogoi and attended by AICC General Secretary Jitendra Singh, brought together leaders from Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Anchalik Gana Morcha, CPM, CPI, CPI(ML) and APHLC. After nearly two hours of deliberations, all parties reached a consensus to contest the upcoming elections jointly to “free Assam from misrule, corruption and oppression.”

Addressing the media after the meeting, Gaurav Gogoi said, “All opposition forces are committed to forming a people’s government in Assam.”

We are determined to free the people of Assam from the oppression and unfair treatment inflicted by the BJP government in the state”.

We along with all the oppositions have taken a stand and together we will defend the feelings and aspirations of the people of Assam. The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led BJP government which is working to strangle and sell off Assam..we will all unite to fight against it and uproot this injustice.

Earlier, the APCC Political Affairs Committee met at Rajiv Bhawan, where several key resolutions were adopted, including the launch of a new statewide outreach campaign — “Raijor Padulit, Raijor Congress” (Congress at People’s Doorstep).

Gogoi announced that Congress leaders will visit every corner of the state to interact with citizens, while 80–90% Booth Level Agents have already been appointed in nearly 29,000 polling stations.

He also announced plans for a special musical event, “Kanchanjungha – Sanskriti Houk Maitriyor Mantra”, on November 18, 2025, in memory of late singer Zubeen Garg, along with a Nahor tree plantation drive across Assam.

Further details of the opposition alliance and future programmes will be announced soon, Gogoi added.
