A major political confrontation erupted in Dispur as the Congress staged a protest at the Manabendra Complex, alleging serious irregularities in the ongoing Special Revision of Assam’s voter list. Senior party leaders and workers gathered to accuse the Election Commission of allowing “unexplained deletions and suspicious additions” to the electoral rolls, warning that the alleged lapses threatened the integrity of the democratic process.
Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress President Mira Borthakur Goswami led the protest and questioned how such large-scale discrepancies could occur during an officially supervised revision exercise. She said senior Congress leaders including Ripun Bora and Gaurav Gogoi had already written to the Election Commission, flagging complaints that genuine voters were reportedly being removed while doubtful entries were being included.
She said the issue had now reached a level where even ordinary citizens were beginning to feel insecure about their right to vote. Warning that the situation should not be allowed to turn into “vote theft”, she demanded a thorough investigation into the allegations.
Mira Borthakur also questioned why the BJP leadership, including state party president Dilip Saikia, had not issued a clear response to the charges now being openly discussed in public. She said people across Assam had the right to know what was happening with their names in the electoral rolls.
Referring to recent statements by Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, she said the matter had taken a far more serious turn. Akhil Gogoi had alleged that a video conference held by BJP leaders discussed the Special Revision process and issued instructions regarding the addition and deletion of names, reportedly in the presence of ministers, MLAs and district functionaries. Such claims, she said, made the situation extremely sensitive and demanded answers.
She further appealed even to BJP supporters to personally verify whether their names were correctly listed, saying, “Winning or losing an election should be decided by the people — but for that, every citizen must first have their right to vote protected.”
In an emotional remark, Mira Borthakur revealed that her own mother’s name was missing from the revised voter list. She said the discovery left her shocked and deeply concerned about how many other genuine voters across Assam might be affected. “If my own mother’s name is missing, then what must be happening to ordinary people?” she asked.
She said the Congress would continue its democratic movement on the issue and would not step back until full transparency was ensured in the voter revision process. She urged the public to carefully check their names and immediately report any deletion, duplication or mismatch.
Mira Borthakur also cited past instances where duplicate voter entries were reportedly detected in other states, and said the media, as the fourth pillar of democracy, had a responsibility to examine the present situation seriously and independently.
The Congress has demanded an immediate probe into the allegations of voter list manipulation and has questioned what it described as the “continued silence” of BJP leaders. Protesters in Dispur said maintaining a clean and fair voter roll was essential for democracy and warned that elections must never be influenced by irregularities in the registration process.
