Congress leader Mira Goswami demands focus on justice in Zubeen Garg death case, criticizes Police actions

Congress leader and President of Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress, Mira Borthakur Goswami, has voiced concerns over the handling of the investigation into the tragic death of popular singer and actor Zubeen Garg. Speaking on Sunday, she questioned the justification of police actions, including the use of handcuffs and the invocation of the National Security Act (NSA) against music director, lyricist, and singer Ajoy Phukan and a few others.

“Is there any justification for the police to handcuff someone while seeking justice for Zubeen Garg’s death?” Goswami asked. “Times are very cruel today. What will happen tomorrow after those in power retire? Take Mahanta Sahab as an example. Today, he put his own brother in jail for writing a poem, but he could not and will not be able to get him out of the lockup. Such is the time we live in.”

Goswami emphasized that public attention should remain on the truth behind Zubeen Garg’s death rather than sensational details. She referred to ongoing discussions about who was on the yacht with Zubeen and cautioned against spreading rumors or fictional accounts.

“How did the grounds of arrest related to Zubeen Garg’s death, signed by Sr. Superintendent of Police, C.M.’s Vigilance Cell, Rosie Kalita, become public?” she asked. “We are only seeking a judicial investigation into Zubeen Garg’s death. We are not concerned about who arranged what at Singapore’s Pan Pacific Hotel or who was present there.”

She criticized the way certain statements in the police documents, especially those mentioned in Column 6, have been publicly discussed. “The arrest signed by Rosie Kalita and related statements cannot become a reason to talk about who was with Zubeen Garg the night before his death. Who will testify for him? Truthfully or falsely?” Goswami said.

The Congress leader urged both authorities and the public to focus on the core questions: why and how Zubeen Garg lost his life at sea and who was with him on the yacht. She expressed concern that details unrelated to the investigation were diverting attention from justice and causing unnecessary distress. “Even after his death, instead of focusing on justice, other details are being publicized, diverting the discussion elsewhere. This is unfortunate,” she said.

Mira Goswami also stressed the emotional impact of such disclosures, warning that sensationalizing minor details could “make Zubeen Garg’s soul suffer a second time.” She appealed for discretion in handling sensitive information, while maintaining that essential facts like grounds of arrest should be shared responsibly.
