The Congress has made another strong and visible move in the Garo Hills ahead of the upcoming GHADC elections, with two massive joining programmes held on 26 and 27 November at Rangsakona and Gambegre. Over the two days, more than 5,000 people formally joined the party, giving the Congress fresh strength and confidence in a region that holds major political importance.
One of the most notable developments was the decision of Mrs. Sadyarani Sangma, the lone sitting woman MDC of the TMC and a former MLA, to leave her party and join the Congress. Her entry was seen as a major gain because she brings with her a strong base of supporters from the Dengnakpara area. Along with her, former MLA Winnersome Sangma, who was earlier with the BJP, also joined the Congress. Party leaders described these moves as early signs of a shifting political mood in Garo Hills.
The joining programmes were organised in the presence of several senior leaders from the national and state units. Dr. A. Chellakumar, the AICC in-charge for Meghalaya, led the programme. He was accompanied by MPCC President Vincent Pala, Garo Hills MP Saleng Sangma, AICC Joint Secretary and Northeast in-charge Adv. Mathew Antony, and other senior leaders from the region. Their presence signaled that the party’s top leadership is now paying close attention to developments in Meghalaya, especially as the GHADC elections draw closer.
Both Rangsakona and Gambegre saw heavy turnout, with long queues of supporters who came to show their support for the Congress. Local leaders said that the crowds reflected a growing desire for political change in the region. Party workers on the ground also felt that such large gatherings were happening after a long time, and that this momentum could continue in the coming months.
A significant observation from the events was that the Congress leadership in Meghalaya appears to be adjusting its working style. Several leaders said that the party is becoming more open, inclusive, and responsive to local needs. They added that leaders are learning to accommodate different viewpoints while still working toward the larger goal of bringing the Congress back to power in the state and strengthening its position in the North East.
AICC Joint Secretary Adv. Mathew Antony, who oversees party affairs in Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram, said that the recent changes within the party leadership are already showing results. According to him, the Congress is slowly regaining lost ground in the North East, and the developments in Meghalaya are creating a positive ripple effect in other states of the region.
In Gambegre, the joining of Sadyarani M. Sangma drew particular attention. Her entry is being seen as a direct challenge to the ruling NPP, as Gambegre is the constituency represented by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s wife, Mehtab Chandee Sangma. The seat was earlier held by Saleng A. Sangma, who vacated it after winning the Tura Lok Sabha seat. With thousands of her supporters also joining, Sadyarani’s shift has set off political discussions about possible changes in voter loyalty ahead of the GHADC polls.
