The Dhemaji District Congress Committee today organised a protest in Dhemaji demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the alleged rice misappropriation scam linked to the Food Corporation of India (FCI) warehouse in the district.
More than one hundred Congress workers gathered in front of the Dhemaji Kachari Maidan and held a peaceful but strong protest. The protesters said that this case may be the biggest rice scam ever reported in Dhemaji district. During the protest, party workers raised slogans calling for an impartial and thorough investigation. They also criticised the government and accused the authorities of failing to protect public food stock.
The protesters demanded that the alleged misappropriation of 26,800 quintals of rice be brought under a CBI investigation at the earliest. They said that such a large-scale scam cannot be ignored and must be investigated by a central agency. The protesters also demanded that all warehouses operating under the FCI Lakhimpur office be covered under the investigation.
The Congress workers further demanded that OMSS contractor Ajay Agarwala and FCI Lakhimpur Divisional Manager Niranjan Lal Jangir be brought under the purview of the enquiry. They said the investigation should identify everyone involved and ensure accountability.
The protest was not limited to the District Congress Committee alone. Members of the Nationalist Youth Congress and the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) also joined the programme and extended their support. The parties said that the issue concerns the people of Dhemaji and must be handled with transparency.
