Eastern Army Commander Lieutenant General R.C. Tiwari visited the India-Bangladesh border areas in Assam’s Dhubri district on Thursday to review the operational readiness and internal security situation along the frontier. During his visit, he also laid the foundation stone for the upcoming Lachit Barphukan Military Station, a new key facility of the Indian Army in lower Assam.
According to defence officials, Lt Gen Tiwari, who is the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Eastern Command, interacted with senior officers and troops deployed in the border areas. He was briefed on the current ground situation, security arrangements, and various steps being taken to ensure the safety of the border region, which shares a long stretch with Bangladesh.
Lt Col Mahender Rawat, Defence Public Relations Officer, said in a statement that the Army Commander closely reviewed the preparedness of formations under the Gajraj Corps, which looks after the western part of Assam and the adjoining border sectors. He also assessed the internal security scenario and the coordination mechanism between the Army, Border Security Force, and local civil authorities.
During his visit, Lt Gen Tiwari took stock of the ongoing infrastructure development projects being carried out by the Indian Army to strengthen logistics and improve mobility in the border areas. He was briefed about various new facilities under construction and the plans to improve connectivity and operational efficiency in the region.
The highlight of the visit was the laying of the foundation stone of the Lachit Barphukan Military Station in Dhubri. The new station, named after the legendary Ahom general Lachit Barphukan, aims to honour the valour and leadership of one of Assam’s greatest historical figures. Officials said the name symbolizes the spirit of courage, determination, and resilience that reflects Assam’s proud military tradition.
Defence PRO Lt Col Rawat said the establishment of this military station will significantly enhance the Army’s operational capabilities in the western part of Assam. “Named after the legendary Ahom Commander, Lachit Barphukan, the new military station embodies the indomitable spirit of courage, leadership, and resilience that defines the heritage of a resurgent Assam,” he said.
