Fear and uncertainty have spread across the Damsara area under the Gharmura Reserved Forest in Hailakandi district after the Forest Department issued eviction notices to 522 families, asking them to vacate their homes. The notices have caused deep anxiety among residents, many of whom say they have been living in the area for years and have no other place to go.
According to local sources, the eviction notices were recently served to households living in and around the forest area. Soon after the news spread, panic set in among families, especially daily wage earners and poor households who depend on nearby areas for their livelihood. Many residents said the notices came without prior discussion or clarity on rehabilitation.
Following reports of the proposed eviction drive, local MLA Suzam Uddin Laskar rushed to the area and met the affected families to understand the situation on the ground. During his visit, the MLA listened to residents’ concerns and expressed strong opposition to the eviction process as it currently stands.
Addressing the people gathered in the area, Laskar questioned the manner in which the eviction notices were issued. He also raised concerns over what he described as a repeated pattern of eviction drives affecting people from a particular religious community. “Why are such eviction drives being carried out again and again targeting people of one community? Where will these 522 families go?” he asked.
The MLA said eviction without proper planning and rehabilitation would only worsen the suffering of already vulnerable families. He stressed that many of the affected residents are poor and have limited means to find alternative shelter. “Evicting families without providing them with alternative arrangements is unacceptable. No one’s home should be touched without proper resettlement,” Laskar said.
He further said that he has appealed to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to intervene in the matter. According to Laskar, the government must ensure that proper rehabilitation measures are in place before any eviction is carried out. He urged the administration to act with sensitivity and fairness while dealing with families who may lose their homes.
