In Chandrapur area near Guwahati, local residents caught a man who was allegedly posing as a doctor and cheating people by using false names and fake identity cards. The man was tied up and beaten by locals at Chandrapur Tea Garden after several accusations of fraud and deception came to light.
According to local sources, the man recently married a young woman from the Chandrapur Tea Garden locality on December 4. During the marriage, he reportedly introduced himself as a doctor and claimed he was working in the health sector. However, soon after the wedding, doubts started to grow among the woman’s family and neighbours when they noticed several inconsistencies in his claims and behaviour.
The anger of the residents increased further when they allegedly discovered that the gold ornaments given to the bride during the wedding were fake. Even the court marriage documents were suspected to be forged. These findings led the locals to believe that the man was not who he claimed to be and that the entire marriage may have been part of a planned fraud.
The matter took an even more serious turn when it was revealed that the accused had allegedly married at least five women in different places, each time posing as a doctor. Locals said he had been introducing himself as a qualified medical professional and using this false identity to win trust and get married. Many people in the area expressed shock and anger after learning that he might have been running this fraud for a long time.
The accused has been identified as Anil Bhagawati, a resident of Hajo. During the initial inquiry, police reportedly found several identity cards in his possession, all carrying different names and details. This raised strong suspicion that he had been using multiple identities for many years.
According to information available, one of the identity cards described him as Dr. Anil Kumar Bhagawati, a Medical and Health Officer (AYUSH) posted in Meghalaya. Another identity card carried the name Dr. Techi John Methio, also shown as a Medical and Health Officer (AYUSH) in Meghalaya. Apart from these, one voter ID card was in the name of Anil Bhagawati, while another voter ID card mentioned Techi John Methio. These findings deepened the belief that he had been changing names and identities to mislead authorities and ordinary people.
