Ferry services between Guwahati and North Guwahati were suspended on Friday as a safety measure after dense fog covered the Brahmaputra River, leading to extremely poor visibility.
Officials from the Inland Water Transport (IWT) Department said the suspension was necessary to avoid any possible accidents on the river. They explained that the fog over the Brahmaputra had become so thick that navigating boats safely was no longer possible.
Guwahati has been experiencing heavy fog since Thursday. In many areas, visibility dropped sharply, making it difficult for people to see clearly even at short distances. The fog appeared to be much denser near open areas like the river, unlike city roads that are surrounded by buildings and shops.
Because the river is completely open, the fog spreads across the water and becomes thicker. Officials said this creates a higher risk for ferries, which depend on clear visibility to move safely.
The suspension of services is expected to continue until conditions improve. Authorities said that passenger safety remains the top priority, and operations will only resume when visibility returns to normal levels.
