The All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) in Kokrajhar held a large torchlight rally on Thursday evening, calling on the government to speed up the full implementation of the Bodo Territorial Region (BTR) Accord. The accord was signed on January 27, 2020, between the Government of India, ABSU, four factions of the NDFB, and the United Bodo People’s Organisation (UBPO).
The rally, which moved through the main parts of Kokrajhar town, began at the MP & HS Government Secondary School playground and ended at Bodofa Children’s Park. Hundreds of people joined the march, holding torches and raising slogans to remind the government of its commitments to the Bodo community.
ABSU leaders told the media that although some provisions of the accord have been carried out, many key clauses still remain incomplete. They said this continuing delay has created frustration among people in the BTR area, who had expected faster progress after the historic agreement. The leaders stressed that the government should immediately act on the 125th Constitutional Amendment and Clause 280, and ensure that these are taken up seriously in the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.
Senior ABSU members, including Vice President Kwrwmdao Wary, Swmdwn Brahma, Kokrajhar District Committee President Kripesh Daimary, and General Secretary Kampa Basumatary, were present at the rally. They addressed the gathering and said the union would continue its democratic movement until every clause of the accord is fully implemented.
The leaders added that full implementation of the BTR Accord is essential for the welfare and development of the Bodo community and the Bodoland Territorial Council region. They said people want to see real progress on the ground and hope the government will respond without further delay.
