The Gauhati High Court Bar Association (GHCBA) has announced that its members will hold a peaceful hunger strike for three days to oppose the proposed shifting of the Principal Seat of the Gauhati High Court from its present location.
The decision comes after the Association’s General Body met on January 6 and again discussed the matter in detail. After deliberation, the members once again confirmed their earlier stand that the Principal Seat should not be moved. The Association said this has also been reflected in earlier resolutions and in a referendum held among its members.
The Bar Association has also appealed to its members to stay away from the proposed foundation stone laying ceremony for the new High Court building. This ceremony is scheduled to be held on January 11 at Rangmahal in North Guwahati. The Association has requested all advocates to honour the collective decision of the General Body and to maintain unity and institutional discipline.
As part of the protest, the Association will hold a peaceful hunger strike on January 8, 9 and 11. The strike will take place in front of the old Gauhati High Court building near Gate No. 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on all three days. The Bar Association stated that this is a democratic way of expressing its stand and that resolutions passed by the General Body form an important part of institutional discipline.
