Assam Pradesh Congress President and MP Gaurav Gogoi has raised concerns over the mysterious death of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, criticizing the state government for its lack of action in the investigation. Speaking to the media, Gogoi highlighted several unanswered questions surrounding the case and accused the Assam government of delaying justice.
“People of Assam have seen numerous photographs of Shyamkanu Mahanta and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma together. Citizens are now demanding answers on this. Even Shyamkanu Mahanta’s Facebook page has been deleted, which is very surprising. How and when did Shyamkanu Mahanta rise to prominence? He conducted the Northeast Festival during the BJP government’s tenure in Assam and received government funds. But because of whom? Whose support was there? Everyone can understand this. Yet, the Chief Minister is doing nothing,” Gogoi said.
He further alleged that while serious charges, including homicide and culpable homicide, have been registered against the accused, the Assam police are not taking proper action. “The responsibility of the Assam government is to collect evidence and proceed with the case. But they are not doing this. Till now, people have not clearly understood what the case ID of Zubeen Garg is or how he died. The police are asking questions to artists in Assam instead of calling the accused from Singapore. What is the investigation team doing?” Gogoi questioned.
He also referred to previous cases in Assam, highlighting the deaths of Junmoni Rabha and Jyotisa Das, where Special Investigation Teams (SITs) and even the CBI were involved, but no clear answers emerged. “Why was Jyotisa Das compelled to commit suicide? Even after forming SITs, nothing substantial has come out. That is why we are organizing a candlelight march to demand justice. The people of Assam want justice, and Garima Saikia, the wife of Zubeen Garg, wants justice,” he added.
Gaurav Gogoi demanded that the investigation be made completely transparent and criticized the Chief Minister for allegedly diverting attention from the case. He emphasized that justice should not be delayed, and the government must take responsibility for ensuring a fair investigation into the singer’s death.
