Congress Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday reacted to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s decision to appoint Bihar Minister Nitin Nabin as its national working president, questioning the manner in which the decision was taken. Gogoi said the nomination reflects “a lack of process and a lack of engagement with the sentiment of the majority of the party workers,” and raises serious questions about internal democracy within the BJP.
In a sharp response, Gogoi said that important organisational posts in a national party cannot be decided without proper consultation and transparency. He remarked that such appointments appear to be driven by a small leadership circle rather than the collective voice of workers who form the backbone of the party. Gogoi said that the decisions taken without wider discussion weaken democratic traditions within political organisations and distance the leadership from the ground-level workers.
His comments came soon after the BJP announced the appointment of Nitin Nabin, the Bihar State Road Construction Minister, as the party’s national working president. The decision was taken by the BJP’s parliamentary board and formally announced in New Delhi on Sunday.
Nitin Nabin, 45, is considered one of the younger and more prominent BJP leaders from Bihar. Within the party, his elevation is being projected as a move to strengthen the organisation at the national level and to promote a new generation of leadership. BJP leaders have described the appointment as part of the party’s broader effort to give greater responsibility to leaders who have both administrative and organisational experience.
A five-time Member of the Legislative Assembly, Nabin represents the Bankipur Assembly constituency in Bihar. Over the years, he has built a strong presence in state politics and has maintained close links with party workers in his constituency. His repeated electoral victories have helped him emerge as a key face of the BJP in the state.
Nabin has served twice as a minister in the Bihar government and is currently holding the important portfolio of State Road Construction Minister. In this role, he has been associated with several infrastructure projects and has often highlighted road development as a priority area for improving connectivity and economic activity in Bihar.
Apart from his ministerial work, Nabin has also handled major organisational responsibilities within the BJP. He previously served as the party’s in-charge for Chhattisgarh, where his work in strengthening the party structure and improving coordination among different units was appreciated by senior leaders. Party sources have pointed to his organisational skills as one of the reasons behind his elevation to the national post.
