Assam Pradesh Congress president and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, has written a letter to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, requesting the state government to make late Zubeen Garg’s last Assamese film “Roi Roi Binale” tax-free. The film, directed by Rajesh Bhuyan, is set to release across Assam on October 31.
In his letter, Gaurav Gogoi described Zubeen Garg as an artist who went far beyond the world of music and cinema. He said Zubeen was not only a singer and actor but also a cultural icon who carried the pride of Assam wherever he went. Gogoi mentioned that Zubeen Garg’s sudden death last month in Singapore had left the people of Assam deeply saddened, and that his memory continues to live on through his songs, films, and works.
Gogoi wrote that “Roi Roi Binale” holds a special place in the hearts of the people because it is Zubeen’s final film. The movie has already received a huge public response even before its release, with advance ticket bookings pouring in from different parts of Assam. This, Gogoi said, shows how strongly people want to celebrate and remember Zubeen Garg through his art.
He urged the Assam government to declare the film tax-free across the state so that more people can watch it and connect with Zubeen’s last creative work. “Such a decision,” Gogoi wrote, “would be a fitting tribute to Zubeen Garg’s lifelong commitment to promoting Assamese culture and music.”
In the letter addressed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Gogoi stated that this gesture would allow people from every corner of Assam—both in towns and villages—to watch the film without the burden of tax. He expressed hope that the government would consider this proposal seriously and honour the emotions of millions of fans who looked up to Zubeen as a voice of the Assamese soul.
Zubeen Garg, who passed away in September, was one of Assam’s most loved and respected artists. Over the years, he earned immense popularity for his songs in Assamese, Hindi, Bengali, and several other languages. Apart from his music, Zubeen also made his mark as an actor, director, and composer. His artistic contributions made him a household name not just in Assam but across India.
