A meeting was held on Thursday evening at the Tezpur University campus in which students, teachers, and non-teaching staff interacted with officials from the Assam Higher Education Department and placed several concerns relating to the functioning of the university administration.

According to handwritten minutes of the discussion, which were recorded on November 6 at around 5 pm inside the university premises, many participants raised questions about what they called “multiple issues” regarding the governance style of Vice-Chancellor Dr. S. N. Singh. The minutes mention that several allegations and complaints were shared by members present in the meeting, and the officials heard them in detail.

The document states that the Department of Higher Education has assured those present that a strict and time-bound inquiry will be initiated against the Vice-Chancellor. It further records that during the pendency of such an inquiry, the Vice-Chancellor “will not be administering the university.” The note has been signed by Joint Secretary Saumya Gupta, who represented the department in the meeting. The minutes also mention that the situation will remain under status quo until further decision is taken by the authorities.

Although the minutes do not describe the nature of the allegations in detail, the atmosphere on campus has remained tense over the past several days, with student representatives and teachers repeatedly demanding a transparent investigation and interim steps to restore confidence in the campus administration. It is understood that the meeting was organised after several representations from students and faculty groups, who said they were dissatisfied with the manner in which administrative decisions were being taken at the institution.

Students who took part in the meeting said that they had asked the officials for a fair, independent, and time-bound process, and also conveyed that the academic environment should not be disturbed during the inquiry period. A member of the non-teaching staff who was present said that the community only wanted accountability and clarity regarding administrative decisions that affect day-to-day functioning of the university.

Meanwhile, Assam Congress President and Member of Parliament Gaurav Gogoi has reacted strongly to the matter. In a public statement today, he said that it was disappointing to see the manner in which the Tezpur University situation was being handled by the government. Gogoi also praised the stand taken by students and faculty. “I am proud of the manner in which the students and faculty of Tezpur University have conducted themselves. Firm, unbending and dignified,” he said in his remarks. He also described the developments as part of what he called the “Kanchanjunga spirit of Assam” and the idea of “Natun Axom.”
