The state GST department continued its investigation for the fifth straight day at the industrial unit of McLeod Russel India Ltd in Amingaon on Saturday. Officers are examining allegations of large-scale financial irregularities and suspected tax evasion by the company.
A 12-member team led by GST Commissioner Manoj Kumar Dowari has been stationed at the premises since the beginning of the inspection. Officials said the team is scrutinising account books, financial statements, computer records and supporting documents to verify the company’s tax filings.
According to officials familiar with the investigation, several irregularities have already been detected during the inspection. The alleged tax evasion is estimated to run into several crores of rupees, though authorities have not given an official figure so far.
Officers said the company has not shared all the information sought by the department. They claimed that some documents were withheld, certain details were concealed, and explanations provided by the company did not match the records found during the inspection. Officials said such gaps prompted them to continue the raid for additional days.
Commissioner Dowari said the GST team would remain on site until the company furnishes complete, accurate and verifiable details of its accounts and tax records. He emphasised that the department was committed to ensuring proper compliance with tax laws and transparency in financial reporting.
McLeod Russel is known as the largest tea producer in Assam. The company has its headquarters in Kolkata and owns nearly 33 tea gardens across the state. The ongoing investigation has drawn attention as the company plays a major role in the tea industry, which is one of the key economic sectors in Assam.
