Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that documents linked to the case involving state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi would be made public within this month, once final clearance is received from the Union Home Ministry.
Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister said the disclosure could take place either between January 15 and 18, or later in the month between January 24 and 31. He claimed that the investigating agencies have gathered enough material to surprise the public, but said the state government is waiting for a “small nod” from the Home Ministry before making the information public.
Sarma said the Assam Police had done a “good job” in probing the matter so far. However, he added that the state police has certain limitations when it comes to deeper investigation beyond its jurisdiction. “Whatever information has been collected till now is sufficient to shock people,” he said.
According to the Chief Minister, once the findings are officially released, the case would be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). He said the NIA would be better placed to carry out the investigation independently and more effectively.
Sarma also said that the process had been delayed due to the death of noted Assamese cultural icon Zubeen Garg, which, he said, led to a pause in public communication on the matter.
The Chief Minister reiterated that the issue should be viewed from the perspective of national security and not just electoral politics, especially with Assembly elections approaching. He maintained that the state government would place all available facts before the public once procedural formalities are completed.
