Assam Congress President and Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi has criticised the chargesheet filed in the case of singer Zubeen Garg’s death. He said the document was “not about justice” and instead an attempt to damage the late singer’s reputation.

Addressing reporters, Gogoi said that the chargesheet “is not about justice but about character assassination.” He further alleged that the sole purpose of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is to lower Zubeen Garg’s reputation in the eyes of the people of Assam. According to him, the government can go to any extent to achieve this.

Gogoi said, “To lower his reputation, they can even blackmail the family and supporters of late Zubeen Garg.” He called Zubeen Garg “Assam’s Kanchanjunga,” describing the singer as a towering cultural figure whose legacy must be protected. “We must not let Himanta Biswa Sarma harm Zubeen da’s legacy,” he said.

The statements came at a time when emotions continue to run high in Assam following the death of the popular singer. Zubeen Garg passed away on September 19 while swimming in the sea in Singapore. He was scheduled to perform at the 4th Northeast India Festival the next day at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Questions had been raised in both Singapore and India over the circumstances of his death. Last week, a Special Investigation Team in Assam named four individuals, including Garg’s secretary Siddhartha Sharma and festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, in a chargesheet alleging murder.

However, earlier in the day, the Singapore Police Force issued a statement saying no foul play was suspected so far based on their investigation. The police said that the case remains under investigation under the Singapore Coroners Act, and a Coroner’s Inquiry is scheduled for January and February 2026. They said that the findings would be submitted to the State Coroner and would be made public once the inquiry concludes.

“Based on our investigations so far, the SPF does not suspect foul play in the death of Garg,” the Singapore Police said in a statement issued on December 18. They added that they were committed to a “thorough and professional investigation” and urged the public not to speculate or spread unverified information. They appealed for patience from all parties involved.
