Himanta caught lying? Fact check shows Rahul Gandhi did visit Bhupen Hazarika’s residence

CM Sarma, while criticizing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for visiting Guwahati 28 days after the death of singer Zubeen Garg, called the delay “shocking.”

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday claimed that no Congress leaders visited the residence of cultural icon Dr. Bhupen Hazarika after his demise. However, a closer look at past records and social media posts shows otherwise, raising questions about the accuracy of his statements.

CM Sarma, while criticizing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for visiting Guwahati 28 days after the death of singer Zubeen Garg, called the delay “shocking.” He questioned whether the life of a human being as precious as Zubeen was not worth the attention, highlighting the visits of Union Ministers Jyotiraditya Scindia and Kiren Rijiju to the singer’s Samadhi and residence in Kahilipara. In his remarks, he drew a parallel with Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s cremation, claiming that no Congress leaders attended the funeral.

However, social media posts and photographs tell a different story. Records show that Rahul Gandhi did visit Dr. Hazarika’s residence at Nizarapaar in Guwahati just five days after the legendary singer’s death. A Facebook post dated November 10, 2011, shows him paying homage, discussing the religious ceremonies, and coordinating with the family for the last rites. This clearly indicates that senior Congress leaders were present at the residence, contradicting CM Sarma’s statement.

Congress leaders responded to the Chief Minister’s remarks. They said, “Bad Liar! Mr. Chief Minister, it is sad to see your condition. You have forgotten things. Today you claimed Rahul Gandhi did not come after Bhupen da’s death. But the photo you yourself posted on Facebook shows otherwise. Just a reminder, sir.”
