A major irregularity in the voter list has come to light in Golaghat after a young voter discovered that his EPIC number was no longer registered under his own name, but had instead appeared in the name of another person living in Punjab. The incident has created concern among local residents, who fear that such errors may point to deeper problems in the electoral system.
The case involves Akshyat Bora, son of Professor Dr Bedanta Borah, who lives at Mission Compound in Golaghat. Akshyat had turned 18 recently and was issued an official voter identity card with EPIC No. ERI0041236. He had cast his first vote in the 2024 Parliamentary Election at Chanmari LP School. On that day, he was welcomed as a new voter and even felicitated with a traditional gamosa, which made the moment special for him and his family.
However, the situation took a surprising turn when the voter verification team visited Dr Borah’s residence yesterday. During the routine verification, the family was informed that Akshyat’s name had been removed from the voter list. What followed was even more shocking: the same EPIC number that originally belonged to Akshyat now appeared in government records under a woman named Sabiya, aged 23, from Ludhiana district in Punjab.
Documents available through the national voter database show the EPIC number ERI0041236 assigned to a female voter, with her polling station listed as Government Primary Smart School, Kasabad, in the Sahnewal Assembly Constituency. This discovery has raised questions on how one unique identification number could be linked to two different individuals living in two different states.
