Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that eight Bangladeshi nationals who had entered India illegally were deported to their country. The move is part of Assam’s continuing drive against unauthorised entry and settlement by foreign nationals in the state.
The Chief Minister made the announcement on social media, using a mix of humour and firmness to express his message. In his post, Sarma wrote, “There are 7 wonders of the world and the 8th wonder is illegal infiltrators trying to sneak into Assam and capture our lands. However, the good news is that we won’t let these wonders wander around here in Assam anymore. 8 Alices in the Wonderland PUSHED BACK. Bye.”
The remark, though playful in tone, clearly underlined the state government’s tough stand on infiltration from across the border. The term “Alices in the Wonderland” was seen as a sarcastic reference to the intruders, suggesting they were lost or out of place.
This latest deportation came just a day after the Chief Minister had shared another update about similar action taken on October 20, when 18 Bangladeshi nationals were reportedly caught and sent back to their country. On that occasion, Sarma used a cricket analogy to describe the government’s action, saying, “Just like Kohli’s iconic Straight Drive, we are also executing PUSHBACKS straight back to the territory of illegal infiltrators.”
He also wrote that the operation was conducted from Sribhumi district early in the morning. Adding a festive note, Sarma remarked, “Diwali is really the time when the good defeats the evil.”
