The Assam government has restored Internet and mobile data services in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts after the law and order situation in the area showed clear signs of improvement. The services came back into effect from 8:00 AM on December 28, 2025.
Earlier, Internet and mobile data had been suspended from December 23 following a serious disturbance in the region. The suspension order had been issued under Section 5(2) of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885 along with the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017. Officials said the move was taken as an urgent step to prevent tension, fear, and the spread of rumours.
In a new notification issued on December 27 by the Home and Political Department, the state government said that the situation in both districts had now improved and normalised. The notification stated that there was no further apprehension regarding public peace or safety at present. Based on this assessment, the earlier shutdown order was formally revoked.
The notification was signed by Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam, Ajay Tewari, IAS, on behalf of the Governor of Assam. It clearly directed all mobile service providers operating in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong to resume Internet and mobile data services from the morning of December 28.
Residents in both districts had been facing inconvenience during the suspension period, as many daily activities now rely on Internet access. Students, business owners, office-goers, and families depending on online communication were among those affected. Digital payments, banking services, and online transactions had also slowed down during the shutdown.
With services restored, normal digital activity has resumed across the districts. Business transactions, online learning, and routine communication are expected to return to normal over the coming days.
The government has said that such temporary suspensions are used only in exceptional situations when there is a risk to public order. Authorities will continue to monitor the ground situation while appealing to citizens to act responsibly online and avoid spreading unverified information.
