Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Garg Saikia, spoke to the media on Friday at Zubeen Kshetra in Sonapur, where her husband has been laid to rest. She appeared emotional while reacting to the filing of the chargesheet by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam CID in the singer’s murder case.
Lighting lamps and offering prayers at the site, Garima questioned the very reason behind the killing of a man she described as generous and selfless throughout his life. She said she still finds it hard to understand how anyone could plan and carry out such a crime for personal gain.
“I cannot understand how someone could kill a person like Zubeen,” she said. “He always gave more than he took. He lived for people, for music, and for Assam. What could anyone gain by doing this?”
Garima said the family has accepted the filing of the chargesheet with a sense of relief and now places full trust in the judicial process. She acknowledged the efforts of the SIT and said the investigation appeared to have followed the path expected by the family and the public.
“The SIT has worked very hard on this case,” she said. “Now everything depends on the court. Those who are guilty must be punished strictly. Justice should not be delayed.”
Clarifying speculation about legal proceedings abroad, Garima stated clearly that the family has no plans to pursue the case in Singapore. She said the investigation was registered in Assam and has progressed properly under Indian law.
“Singapore and India have different legal systems,” she said. “We have full faith in the Assam Police and the laws of our country. We believe justice will be delivered here.”
She also referred to the findings of Singapore authorities related to the incident but said the responsibility of delivering justice now rests with the Assam government and state police. According to her, the family respects all institutions involved and does not wish to create any conflict between jurisdictions.
Earlier in the day, the SIT submitted a primary chargesheet running into about 2,500 pages, supported by more than 12,000 pages of digital records, forensic reports, financial documents and other evidence. The chargesheet was filed before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Kamrup Metropolitan district.
Confirming the development, CID Special Director General of Police Munna Prasad Gupta said the investigation had collected extensive material, making it one of the most detailed chargesheets filed in a murder case in the country. He said the evidence covers financial transactions, digital data, forensic findings and circumstantial links.
Several accused have been charged under strict provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including sections related to murder, criminal conspiracy, cheating, extortion, criminal breach of trust and destruction of evidence. Among the main accused named are Siddharth Sharma, Shyamkanu Mahanta, Shekharjyoti Goswami, Amritprabha Mahanta, Sandipan Garg, Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya. Some of them face direct charges under Section 103(1), which deals with murder.
Reacting to the filing of the chargesheet, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the SIT had completed its task within the promised timeframe. He said the government remains committed to ensuring justice for Zubeen Garg.
