Assam Director General of Police Harmeet Singh made an appeal for peace amid the ongoing unrest in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts, saying violence can never be a means to achieve any demand. He said the government is ready to find a solution through talks and dialogue, but warned that lawlessness will only make the situation worse.
Speaking to reporters, the DGP said the trouble began on Monday when a large crowd gathered in parts of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong during protests linked to a long-standing land dispute. He said he personally went to the protest site and spoke to the demonstrators in an attempt to calm the situation and prevent violence.
According to Harmeet Singh, the situation took a serious turn after the protest leader was taken to Guwahati for a medical check-up. Doctors felt his health was deteriorating due to a hunger strike. However, misinformation spread quickly, leading many to believe that the leader had been arrested. This rumour triggered anger and panic among the protesters, resulting in clashes.
“A huge crowd has gathered here since yesterday. I met the protestors and spoke with them. Last night, their leader was taken to Guwahati only for a medical check-up. Someone spread false information that he was arrested. Violence does not get anything for anybody,” the DGP said.
He said protesters later tried to take control of a bridge, and when police attempted to stop them, they were attacked. Stones and crude bombs were allegedly hurled at the police team. The DGP himself was injured after being hit with bows and arrows. He said the police have video footage and photographs of those involved and legal action will be taken.
“So far, 48 police personnel have been injured. Shops have been burnt and public property damaged. I want to clearly say that the government is in talks with the protestors and a date has already been fixed for discussions. Violence will only harm everyone,” he said.
Meanwhile, following the serious law-and-order situation, the Assam government suspended internet and mobile data services in both Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts to prevent the spread of rumours and misinformation.
