‘Letter Rogatory not sent’: Akhil Gogoi flags major legal lapse in Zubeen Garg probe ‘Letter Rogatory not sent’: Akhil Gogoi flags major legal lapse in Zubeen Garg probe

Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi today expressed strong dissatisfaction with the investigation into the death of popular singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg. He said that the government has failed to take proper legal steps and that people across Assam are losing trust in the process.

Gogoi said that the emotions surrounding Zubeen Garg’s death are very deep, and people are hurt and angry. He said, the public is not convinced that the investigation is being done properly. He said that lakhs of people are feeling let down, and there is a growing belief that the authorities are only acting for show, not for real justice.

He said that both the CID and SIT have not been able to build confidence among the people. He said many citizens think that the investigation looks like a performance and not a sincere probe. Gogoi said that the government must prove its seriousness through proper legal actions, not just public statements.

A major point he raised was the absence of a Letter Rogatory, which is a formal legal request sent to another country to collect evidence. He explained that since the incident took place in Singapore, Indian authorities must send a Letter Rogatory to obtain documents, CCTV footage, medical reports, and witness statements. He said that without this legal step, no evidence received from Singapore would hold value in court.

Gogoi said he had already submitted documents and requests to the Home Department and also explained the legal process under Section 166A of the Criminal Procedure Code. He warned that failure to follow this step could result in the case being dismissed in court due to lack of valid evidence. He said that he fears the case may collapse if proper international procedures are not followed in time.

He questioned why the government has not sent the required legal request even after so many weeks. He suggested that if the authorities were serious, they would have taken this step immediately. He raised doubts about the intention behind the delay and said that such lapses could protect those who may be responsible or weaken the case deliberately. According to him, this is not just negligence but a matter that raises serious suspicion.

Gogoi also said that he had personally pushed for the required legal process and submitted all related papers. He said the government cannot ignore the legal rules and then claim it is doing a proper investigation. He added that if tomorrow the case is rejected by the court due to lack of proper evidence, the responsibility will lie with the government.

Gogoi criticised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, saying that public promises and actual steps are not matching. He said people trusted the government’s assurances, but so far, the actions do not support the words. Gogoi said that the state government must stop putting up a show and start taking real legal steps that ensure justice.

He appealed to the public and the media to stay alert and ask questions. He said this issue is not only about one artist but also about justice and democracy. He urged that if proper steps are not taken now, it could set a bad example for future cases as well. According to him, everyone should demand transparency and timely legal action from the authorities.

Gogoi said he wants justice for Zubeen Garg and his family, but justice cannot be achieved without following the law. He said the government must act with honesty and responsibility and not treat the matter as a publicity exercise. He added that the people of Assam are watching closely and will not accept anything less than a fair, lawful investigation.
