Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi today criticised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma after the Chief Minister made comments advising people not to sell land to “unknown people.” Sarma had said that families should not sell their land in times of financial trouble because “unknown people” come, buy land, and later “impose their own ideology,” which he claimed harms the culture, language, and customs of Assam. He warned that such people “do not know our language, culture, or customs” and may slowly destroy local identity.
However, Lurinjyoti Gogoi hit back with a direct and blunt response, saying the Chief Minister’s remarks only show the complete failure of the BJP government. Gogoi said that even in 2024, the Chief Minister is still giving vague descriptions of “unknown people,” which proves that the government has no clarity on who the illegal immigrants are. He said that a government that cannot even identify illegal immigrants after so many years in power has no moral right to lecture the public.
Gogoi said, “The Chief Minister keeps talking about unknown people. This shows he himself does not know who the illegal immigrants are. It is shocking that even in 2024, the Chief Minister of Assam is clueless.” He added that despite repeated promises, the BJP government has failed to remove illegal names from the voter list, failed to detect illegal immigrants, and failed to complete the NRC process properly. “If the CM cannot identify them, cannot remove their names from voter rolls, and cannot implement NRC, then what kind of Chief Minister is he? He is a useless Chief Minister,” Gogoi said.
He also said that in the 2014 BJP Vision Document, the party had promised that all clauses of the Assam Accord would be fully implemented. But instead of fulfilling those promises, the BJP government brought the CAA, which Gogoi said goes directly against the spirit of the Assam Accord. He accused the BJP of betraying the people of Assam and breaking their trust. According to him, the introduction of CAA has deeply hurt Assamese sentiments and damaged the philosophy and purpose of the Assam Accord.
Gogoi said that the BJP came to power again and again by promising to protect the identity of Assam but has failed at every step. He said that instead of giving speeches about culture being “destroyed,” the Chief Minister should first explain why he has not taken any action on illegal immigration, voter list cleansing, and implementation of NRC. He also said that the BJP uses emotional issues only during elections but does nothing when it comes to real action.
The AJP leader warned that the people of Assam will not forget these failures. He said the government should stop confusing people with vague comments about “unknown people” and start working on real solutions that protect the rights, identity, and land of indigenous communities.
